Bryn is the owner of CrossFit Indy North. Bryn began personal training and coaching in 2003 after being certified as a Health Fitness Specialist by the American College of Sports Medicine. He started his career at the prestigious University Club in Washington, D.C. In 2004, he headed to the UK, where he served as a health specialist and nutritionist to the United States Air Force stationed at RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath. In his first year of a three-year tour training special forces and law enforcement officials, he researched relentlessly to determine the best training regimen to not only improve his athletes’ overall fitness conditioning but also improve their performance in real-world situations. In 2005, Bryn discovered CrossFit and immediately determined it was the best training program to increase overall fitness levels. He also decided it was the only way to prepare his athletes and soldiers for everyday events. For the next two years, teaching the CrossFit training concepts yielded unprecedented results. 2007 proved to be a big year with a return to Washington, D.C., the completion of his master’s degree in Human Nutrition, and state licensure as a nutritionist. Back in D.C., Bryn expanded his training to the masses, including youth, seniors and recreational fitness participants. With the anticipation of their third baby boy, Bryn and his wife, Andrea, decided to move closer to family and relocated to Indianapolis in October of 2008. CrossFit Indy North affiliated in April 2009.

Having been an active participant in sports growing up, I have always had an interest in fitness and exercise. After college, I participated in your typical weight-loss classes: kickboxing, yoga, boot camp, etc. I was searching for an exercise program that I could benefit from and one that would give me results – none of which I found in any of these programs, until Crossfit.
I discovered Crossfit in August 2009 and the workouts weren’t like anything that I had ever experienced before. I started seeing the results that I had been searching for and began dropping inches and getting stronger.

Coach Caitlin Gray was introduced to CrossFit in September of 2009, after having recently graduated from Purdue in May of that year. In addition to being a student in the Liberal Arts Honors Program, Caitlin was a four-year rower on the University’s Division I team. Caitlin has always been involved in athletics, and was successful in her rowing career, which began when she arrived at Purdue in 2005. Some of Caitlin’s accomplishments with Purdue Crew include being voted the team’s Most Valuable Oarswoman in 2008-2009, as well as being selected as All-American her senior year. After leaving Purdue, Caitlin continued to row in an Open program through the Indianapolis Rowing Center, where she was working full time. Although she still enjoyed the sport and practiced every day, Caitlin felt that athletic progress would slow, halt, or even reverse now that her collegiate career had ended. And then she found CrossFit.
It took one CrossFit WOD (a modified half Cindy), and Caitlin was changed forever as an athlete. Although Caitlin will always identify herself as a rower, her passion quickly changed to this new sport of functional fitness. Since that first WOD, Caitlin has competed in the 2009 Section and Regional competitions, the 2010 Open and Regional competitions, and has also competed in many local and nearby events. Furthermore, Caitlin is certified in CrossFit Level 1, CrossFit Mobility, USRowing Level 1, and has taken seminars from Dave Tate of Elite Fitness Training Systems. Caitlin is a full time coach, and fills her days coaching CrossFit at CrossFit Indy North and The Riviera Club (where she started her own CrossFit program in December of 2010), coaching rowing for the Indianapolis Rowing Center, and coaching indoor rowing at the Riviera Club.

Like many who have fallen for this sport, I was a multisport athlete while I was growing up. Basketball, wrestling, soccer, hockey, baseball, track, etc. During college at Indiana University I did whatever the Men’s Health pullout poster told me to do. I was on again, off again, not really sticking with anything and certainly not happy with the results I was getting. I just didn’t know any better! I stumbled across Crossfit late in 2008. I was working the night shift at my day job and came across the mainsite by chance. The workout posted was the “Murph”, which I dismissed as nonsense and thought little else about it. I was under the impression I wanted to be a runner and triathlete. Really, looking back, I was just looking for a competitive outlet and didn’t see a lot of other options on the table. A short time later a friend of mine from high school who was had always been a hard core video gamer since I had known him, mentioned he was doing CrossFit and did 100 pullups in one of his workouts. “Impossible” was my reply. I returned to the site I had dismissed previously and took another look. In November of 2008 my obsession with this sport sprouted its first, innocent root. I walked into the Jordan YMCA to do my first Crossfit workout. I will never forget it. As many rounds as possible in 20 minutes, 10 thrusters (65#) and 10 pullups. No coaching, no scaling, just all out. It was absolutely miserable and afterwards I felt like my arms were going to explode. It was a forgettable workout except that it was my first. My form was suspect, my pullups were all assisted, and I made myself sick. But after a few days off I was back at it and have never looked back.
What I love about Crossfit is the authenticity. The workouts are real. There no gimmicks. If you work hard and push yourself you get results. Everytime. As I learned more and more about the method behind the madness, I began to see that the randomness was intentional and effective. The programming made more sense the more I learned about it. Also, this program attracts winners who are looking to push themselves. In my search for a Crossfit home, I checked out many gyms in the area. After my first workout at Crossfit Indy North with Bryn, I knew this was the place to be. Crossfit Indy North is CRAWLING with people who bust their tails, day in and day out. If you hang around with the firebreathers in our gym for any period of time, their work ethic rubs off on you, and yours on them. Pretty soon you are doing things you once thought were impossible. You look around and other people are doing the same thing. This is a community of extremely fit people, who work together to make everyone around them better. And it is a wonderful place to be.
I love coaching Crossfit because of the people that it attracts. You can coach technique improvement, but you can’t coach the will to improve oneself. And Crossfitters have the will to push themselves in spades. My favorite thing in the world is working with people that will push themselves to get better. If you put in the work, the programming here does the rest.

In 2009 I signed up for an Ironman triathlon and committed to using strict CF & CFE for my training. Instead of spending 15-18 hrs a week swimming, biking & running (literally) hundreds of miles, I did 3-4 CF wods + 5 CFE wods for a total of about 8 hours a week. I was able to continue getting stronger, increase my endurance and still have a social life. Recognizing the benefits of CF and how much I enjoyed telling others about it, I got my CF Level 1 trainer certification and followed that up with the Olympic Lifting Cert. While I continue pushing myself to get stronger and faster, my main passion is helping people reach their fitness goals. Whether it’s helping a former athlete or someone totally new to fitness, I love being a part of their success. Health & fitness is not always an easy pursuit and having the CF community pushing & encouraging you along the way make it much more enjoyable. Feel free to ask me any questions about running, CFE, CF or why gluten is the devil.

I have been a Crossfit athlete since June of 2009, and it has been a passion of mine ever since. I actively participated in Crossfit throughout my entire pregnancy with my first child up until the day before my son was born in July of 2010. I returned to the gym on the first day that my doctor cleared me after the birth of our son, and haven’t looked back ever since. Crossfit helped me stay healthy and strong throughout my entire pregnancy, as well as quickly return to my pre-baby weight and strength. Crossfit pushes your mental and physical limits with every workout. No matter what age or ability an athlete is, they begin achieving real RESULTS, real fast. When it comes to getting stronger, faster, leaner, and more mentally tough, there is no comparison. Aside from the incredible results that athletes achieve, dedicated Crossfit members become part of a community where age and athletic talent are irrelevant. We all support each other and continuously push one another to become better in every component of fitness building lasting relationships and a strong camaraderie. I truly believe Crossfit is the healthiest lifestyle out there, and a community that you will want to be a part of for LIFE!

Joe, AKA “Joe T” has always been interested in sports and activities that present a challenge. After falling into the workout “rut” that occurs to many people, Joe was referred to the CrossFit programming from a close friend. Having nothing to lose he gave CrossFit a shot and instantly found a great challenge. Joe has not looked back since and has seen incredible results with CrossFit in physiological pathways, having lost 30lbs and leaving cholesterol meds behind.
Wanting to share his results with others, Joe attained his Level 1 CrossFit Trainer Certification and enjoys helping others receive the benefits of the CrossFit methodology. Joe T. is an individual Regional Qualifier in the 2010 CrossFit Games – Central East Regional, as well as 2011, placing 14th in 2011.
